Freedom Movement Questions and Answers

The Indian Freedom Movement was a series of historical events from 1857 to 1947 aimed at ending British colonial rule in India. It included the 1857 Revolt, formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885, non-cooperation movements, civil disobedience, and the Quit India Movement, finally achieving independence on August 15, 1947.

The Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-1922) was launched by Mahatma Gandhi to protest British rule and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Indians were asked to boycott British goods, courts, schools, and government services. It was the first mass movement against British rule and was withdrawn after the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922.

The Civil Disobedience Movement (1930) was launched by Mahatma Gandhi with the famous Dandi March (Salt March) on March 12, 1930. Gandhi walked 241 miles from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi to protest the British salt tax by making salt from seawater. It became an international symbol of non-violent resistance.

The Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress on August 8, 1942. Gandhi gave the call to Do or Die. It demanded immediate independence from British rule. The British arrested all major Congress leaders, but the movement spread across India and marked the beginning of the end of British rule.
