The Valmiki Tiger Reserve is located in the West Champaran district of Bihar and is the only tiger reserve in Bihar. It was established in 1990 under Project Tiger and covers an area of about 899.38 sq km. The reserve is situated on the Himalayan foothills and is surrounded by the Nepal border to the north and the Gandak river to the east. It is named after the sage Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana, who is believed to have composed the epic in this forested region. East Champaran district is adjacent to West Champaran and is also significant (Motihari, Champaran Satyagraha), but the tiger reserve is specifically in West Champaran.
