Nalanda University, located in the Nalanda district of Bihar, was one of the greatest centers of learning in the ancient and medieval world. It was established during the Gupta period, traditionally attributed to Kumaragupta I (around 5th century CE). At its peak, Nalanda had over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers from across Asia, including scholars from China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, and Central Asia. The Chinese traveler Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) studied and spent considerable time at Nalanda in the 7th century CE. Nalanda was a residential university offering courses in philosophy, theology, logic, grammar, medicine, and Buddhist studies. It was destroyed by the forces of Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193 CE. Taxila University was located in modern Pakistan (near Rawalpindi), not Bihar. Vikramashila University was also in Bihar but was less prominent than Nalanda. Vallabhi University was in Gujarat. In 2010, the Nalanda University Act was passed to revive this ancient institution.
