Vikramashila University was located near modern Bhagalpur, Bihar, at a place called Antichak on the banks of the Ganga river in Kahalgaon area. It was founded by the Pala king Dharmapala in the late 8th or early 9th century CE. Vikramashila was a major center for Vajrayana Buddhism and Tantra. It had around 108 teachers and 1,000 students at its peak. Like Nalanda, it was also destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193 CE. Patna (ancient Pataliputra) was the capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires but was not the location of Vikramashila. Muzaffarpur is an important commercial city in north Bihar, known for litchi production, but has no connection with Vikramashila. Gaya is the district where Bodh Gaya and the Mahabodhi Temple are located. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has excavated the ruins at Antichak and identified them as Vikramashila. The site is now maintained as a protected monument. Atisha Dipankara, the famous Buddhist scholar who helped spread Buddhism in Tibet, was associated with Vikramashila.
