What are the official dates of the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan?

Last Updated:

The Asian Games are the continent's largest multi-sport event and are held every four years under the Olympic Council of Asia. Japan is hosting the Asian Games for the third time, after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994. Aichi and Nagoya were awarded the Asian Games in 2016 as a joint prefecture-and-city bid. Organisers chose to reuse existing arenas across Aichi rather than build a new athletes' village, and competitors stay in hotels and cruise ships instead. Around 46 participating teams, including an Asian Refugee Team, are competing in 2026. Questions on Asian Games hosts and dates are common in SSC, railway and state PSC exams.

A1 August – 16 August 2026
B19 September – 4 October 2026
C23 September – 8 October 2026
D10 October – 25 October 2026
Correct Answer: 19 September – 4 October 2026Your Answer: B

Explanation

Correct answer: Option B (19 September – 4 October 2026). The 20th Asian Games opened in Japan on 19 September 2026 and are scheduled to close on 4 October 2026, with events spread across Aichi Prefecture and its capital, Nagoya. The opening ceremony of the Games took place at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya. 23 September – 8 October is a tempting choice, but those were the dates of the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, held in 2023. 1 August – 16 August 2026 does not match any part of the official Asian Games calendar approved by the Olympic Council of Asia. 10 October – 25 October 2026 is also wrong, because the Asian Games end on 4 October and the separate Asian Para Games follow later in October. Remember: Aichi–Nagoya 2026 runs from 19 September to 4 October 2026.

Important Notes

  • The 2026 Asian Games feature 43 sports and about 469 medal events, spread across 71 disciplines in Aichi and nearby areas.
  • New Delhi hosted the first Asian Games in 1951, and India hosted the Asian Games again in 1982.
  • India achieved its best-ever Asian Games haul at Hangzhou 2023, winning 106 medals, including 28 gold medals.
  • The next Asian Games after Aichi–Nagoya are scheduled for Doha, Qatar, in 2030, followed by Riyadh in 2034.
  • Cricket, first played at the Asian Games in 2010, is again part of the programme in Aichi–Nagoya 2026.
