The Rigveda praises Saraswati as Naditama, the best or foremost of rivers. The Indus was also a major river, while the religious prominence of the Ganga and Yamuna increased especially in later periods.

The Vedic age is commonly divided into the Early or Rigvedic period, approximately 1500–1000 BCE, and the Later Vedic period, approximately 1000–600 BCE. The division reflects changes in texts, geography, economy, polity, religion and social organisation.
